AN EXERCISE AT RANDOMNESS ....

The  randomized  experiment ,  the  decided  unsexiness  of  the  term  masks  a  truly  elegant and explicit  form . Simply  put , it's  for  devising  answers  to  the  questions  that  scientists  across  various  disciplines  seek  to  answer ;  How  do  we  know  whether  something  works ? Or  how  do  things  work  and  why  do  they  work  that  way .

Take  a  question  that  keeps  reappearing  regularly  in  the  media  each  year : Is  red  wine  good  or  bad  for  us ??  We  learn  a  great  deal  about  how  red  wine  works  by  asking  people  about  their  consumption  and  health  and  looking  for  correlations  between  the  two .

 To  estimate  the  specific  impact  of  red  wine  on  health , though , we  need  to  ask  people  a  lot  of  questions , questions  pertinent  to  everything  they  consume  ( food , prescription  medication , more  unsavory forms  of  medication ) , their  habits   ( exercise , sleep , sexual  activity ) ,  their  past  ( their  health  history , their  parents'  and  grand  parents' health  histories ) and  on  and  on , and  then  try  to  control  for  these  factors  to  isolate  the  impact  of  wine  on  health .  Think  how  long  and  complicated  this  survey  might  be .

Randomized  experiments  completely  re engineer  how  we  go  about  understanding  how  red  wine  works . We  take  it  as  a  given  that  people  differ  in  the  many  and  various  ways  described  above ,( and  many  other  ways  as  well )  but  we  cope  with  these  variances  by  randomly  classifying  and  allotting  people  to  either ;  drink  wine  or  not .

If  people  who  eat  doughnuts  and  never  exercise  are  equally  likely  to  be  in  the  "  wine  treatment "  or  the  "control  treatment ,"   then  we  can  do  a  decent  job  of  assessing  the  average  impact  of  red  wine  over  and  above  the  likely  impact  of  other  factors .

Randomized  experiments  are  by  no  means  a  perfect  tool  for  explanation , but  they  sure  help  informing  us  how  things  work  (or don't  work ),  and  why  they  work  this  or  that  way .

THE ISLAMISATION OF THE ARAB SPRING ...!!

There  are  some  facts  which , whether  for  good  or  bad , are of  utmost  importance  in  the  public  life  of  all  Arabic  countries  at  the  present  moment .  The  most  obvious  of  these  is  the  accession  of  the  masses , that  are  in  their  majorities  composed  of  Musslem  believers , to  complete  social  and  political  power .

As  the  masses , by  definition , neither  should  nor  can  rule  and  direct  their  own  personal  existence , and  still  less  rule  societies  in  general ,  this  fact  means  that  actually  all  Arab  countries  and  societies , and  many  Islamic  countries  as  well , are  suffering  from  the  greatest  social  and  political  crisis  that  can  afflict  it's  peoples , nations , and civilisation .

IT  is  important  to  avoid  giving  the  words "rebellion , masses , religious  and  social  power "  a  meaning  exclusively  or  essentially  religious . Public  life  is  not  solely  a  religious  affair , but  equally , and  even  primarily , intellectual , moral , economic , and  political .

Societies  are  always  dynamic  entities , and  let  us  agree  that  the  Islamic  masses , and  the fundamentalisation  of  these  masses  has  been  in  the  work  for  quite  some  time . And  one  can  not  but  note  the  progressive  appearance  and  triumph  of  the  pseudo-intellectual , unqualified  religious  leaders  and  politicians .

The  functions  of  government  and  of  political  judgment  in  public  affairs  can  not  be  carried  by  clergy  nor  by  men  only  abiding  by  religious  dogmas  and  indoctrination .  whether  it's any  of  the  emergent  new  Arab  Islamic  countries , or  all  of  the  established  theocracies  as  in  Saudi , gulf , or  Iranian  examples .

I  believe  that  the  political  innovations  of  recent  times  all  over  the  area  , signify  nothing  less  than  the  political  domination  of  the  Musslem  masses , and  their  leaders .  Today  we  are   witnessing  the  triumphs  of  a  hyper democracy  in  which  the  Musslem  masses  act  directly , outside  the  law , imposing  its  aspirations and  its  religious  desires  by  means  of  material  pressure . The  masses  believe  that  they  have  the  right  to  impose  and  to  give  force  of  law  to  notions  borrowed  from  scriptures  and  texts  dating  fourteen  hundred  years  ago .

The  religious  masses  crush  beneath  it  everything  that  is  different , everything  that  is  excellent , individual , qualified  and  select . Anybody  who  is  not  like  them , behave  like  them , who  does  not  think  like  them , runs  the  risk  of  being  eliminated .






Some  reflections  on  the  actual  current  affairs  of  the  Arab  and  Islamic  world , that  could  lead  to  more  fanaticism  and  the  gradual  adaptation  of  similar  ways  through out  the  western  world .  as  usual  thanks  for  listening .

  

SHAPING AND DRAFTING MY BLOGS ....

Some  might  judge , that  I'm  not  an  original  thinker , but  merely  a  mixer  or  a  popularizer  of  other  people's  ideas .

I'm  certainly  not  a  scientist , an  established  philosopher , nor  a  historian  recognised  by  scholarly  institutions .  But  I  believe  that  reason  is  available  to  and  surely   attainable  by  the  many , and  not  restricted  to  the  educated  few . A  degree  in  the  natural  sciences , philosophy  or  literatures  is  not  required  to  enter  my  sphere  of  reason , or  follow  my  logic , or  sometimes  my  humour .

IN  theocratic  and  religious  thinking , I  feel  that  religion  has  not  civilised  man .  Man  has  civilised  religions . Gods  and  their  religions  improve  ( if  at  all )  as  man  advances .

Is  it , that  nowadays  religious  orthodoxy  all  over  the  world  is  being  fused  with  social  and  economic  conservatism , intolerance , blind  violence  and  the  guns  and  assault  weapons  freedom ??

To  my  American  and  worldly  opinions ,  and  reasoning  of  most  current  affairs , I'd  refer  to  M. Robinson .  She  said  in  "Night  thoughts  of  a  baffled  humanist" ;  Yet  it  seems  to  me , on  the  darkest  nights , and  sometimes  in  the  clear  light  of  day , that  we  are  losing  the  ethos  that  has  sustained  what  is  most  to  be  valued  in  our  civilisation .

AS  to  my  reasoning  in  Arabic  and  Middle-Eastern  affairs ,  it  is  I  feel  my  duty  and  primary  civic  aim  to  help  restore  the  historical  memory  of  a  founding  generation  of  Arab  thinkers , and  a very  vivid  popular  secularism , mostly  in  the  late  19th  to  the first  half  of  the  20th  century , that  had  explicitly  rejected  theocracy  as  the  basis  for  national  governments , and  to  all forms  of  governance  in  most  Arab  countries .

Vaclav  Havel  once  said ;  "Non  of  us  know  all  the  potentialities  that  slumber  in  the  spirit  of  the  population , or  all  the  ways  in  which  that  population  can  surprise  us  when  there  is  the  right  interplay  of  events "  and  the  leveled  reasoning .

RELIGIOSITY , FAITH , AND THE RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS ....

THE  ideal  man  of  religiosity  is  the  man  of  faith , total  and  blind  faith .

The  question  is  one  of  where  the  centre  of  the  human  personality  is  to  be  located  in  our  modern  times , in  absolute and  blind  faith  or  in  reason .

Are we , making our  centuries old  second  amendment  and  maybe  some  other  constitutional  rights   as  sacred  and  untouchable  as  Musslems  are doing  of  their  1400  years  old , archaic  ways  and  laws , trying to implement  and  make  them  work  in  our  actual  times . The  same  would  be  as  trying  to  apply  some  2700  years  old  fabricated  Hebraic  stories  and  sacred  laws , and  putting  them  to  govern  our  twenty  first  century times  and  lives .

Are  we  so  absolutely  stuck  in  time  and  creative  legislative  power , that  we  only  have  the  hundreds  and  thousands  years  old  rules  and  regulations  to  govern  our  life  in  today's  modern  times ??

Do we  really  have  to  own , individually , war-toys  and  heavy killing  machines , to feel  safe  in  our  houses  and  around  our  communities  and  schools ??

Why  don't  we  safely  store , in  one  place ,  enough  weapons  for  each  of  the  willing  communities , across  the  country , to  be  used  in self-defence  if  and  when  our  government  attacks  us , or  the  commies  and  Russians  arrive , or  the  musslems  and  Jews  invade  our  streets ??

In  the  United  States  today , while  "religiosity  and  conservatism" has  become  an  icon , the  great  tradition  of  liberalism , which  for  centuries  has  given  meaning  and  purpose  to  people , liberalism  that  for  so  many  decades  was  iconic  for  most  of  the  people  and  societies  in  the  west , lacks  outspoken  champions ,  slogans  and  courage .

WE  are  forced  to  take  the  side  of  Ivan  Karamazov , who  says  that  he  "has  to  decline  the  ticket" the  ticket  of  admission  to  a  heavenly  cosmos  where  so  much  evil  has  to  exist  as  the  necessary  precondition  of  good .

IN A HISTORICAL SENSE ....

THE Syrian  upcoming  government , as  an  outcome  of  the  revolution  taking  place  over  there for  almost  two  years  now , should  yield  the  first  real  secular  government ,  the  first  government  to  say  clearly  and  openly that  every  religion  has  exactly  the  same  rights  and  no  more.  Every  sect  has  the  same  rights , and  no  more .

In  other  words , this  future   government  should  have  the  good  sense , the  genius , to  know    that  no  religion  should  be  allowed  to  have  a  sword . A  government  that  knows  how  to  retire  religions  and  Gods   from  politics ,  as it is  an  indispensable  and  a  sure  condition  of  progress .

Such  a  governing  body , should  know  that  to  put  God  in  their  constitution  is  to  put  man  out  of  it , They  should  know  that  the  over recognition  of  any  particular  religion  and  it's  Deity   would  be  seized  upon  by  fanatics , zealots , bigots  and  salafists  , as  a  pretext  for  destroying  the  liberty  and  creativity  of  thought .

Such  a  government  should  know  the  terrible  history  of  all  religious  reigns , and  religiosity  in  different  societies  throughout  the  times , and  the  risks  it  posed  to  the  most  sacred  rights  of  man .

All  governing  members  should  be  clear  in  declaring  their  intentions , that  all  should  have  the  right  to  worship , or  not  to  worship . That  the  law  of  the  land  should  make  no  distinction  on  account  of  religion , sect , or  creed .  Their  intentions  to  found  and  frame  a  government  for  man , and  for  man  alone .

TO  prevent  the  few  from  governing  the  many , and  the  many  from  persecuting  and  destroying  the  few .

All   new  establishing  Arab  regimes  should  follow  such  guidelines ,   established  regimes  as  well ,  Lebanon  comes  to  mind  immediately as  in  bad  need  of  such  a  governing  body .  But  I  honestly  believe  that  the  Syrian  people  are  the  best  qualified , ready , and  mostly  capable  of  possibly  achieving  such  a  great  goal in  the  coming  near  future . I sure  hope  so .

THE PATRIOTIC CITIZEN ...

The  mechanism  of  control , pushed  and exercised  by  the  NRA , and  the  Republican  professional  wright  wingers  politicians  and  media  specialists , usually  work  to  maintain  a  high  level  of  fear  among  the  populace . We  see it  clearly  after  every  public  shooting  of  innocent  kids , or  other  as innocent  people  in  theaters  or  malls , the  last  one  being  today  in  a  California  high-school .  These  well  orchestrated  and  very  manipulative  arguments  are  producing  the  "patriotic  citizen "

The  general  citizenry  of  our  country , in  the  past  decade , affected  by  job  losses , bankrupted  by  medical  bills , foreclosed  on  their  houses , and  constantly  pushed  to  worry  about  the  foreign  enemy  and  the  possible  terrorist  attacks . In  this  historical  absence  of  the  normal , the  patriotic  citizen  holds  on  to  the  privilege  of  being  a  patriot , sometimes , the  greater  privilege  of  being  white  and  a  patriot ,

The  retreat  into  a  tribal  identity  would  be  a  desperate  attempt  to  maintain  self-worth  and  self  importance  at  a  time  of  deep  personal  and  ideological  confusion . The  "patriotic  citizen",  although  abused  by  the  actual  policies  of  the  government , locally  and  federally , unfailingly is  constantly  influenced  to  support  widespread  surveillance  and  permanent  war .

The  "patriotic  citizen"  does  not  question  the  trillion  or  more  Dollars , in  defense - related  spending  and  totally  accepts the  too-many  military  and  civilian  intelligence  agencies , most  of  whose  work  is  now  outsourced  to  private  corporations and  are  held  above  government .

The  "patriotic  citizen " is  deceived  into  accepting  the  state's  insistent  and  forceful  assertion  that  it  constantly  needs  more  police , prisons , inmates , spies , mercenaries  and  terrorists , weapons  and  troops  than  any  other  industrialized  or  western  nation .

The  "patriotic  citizen"  objects  and  could  be scandalised  when  anyone  suggests  that  military  budgets  can  be  cut , that  wars  could  be  ended , and  that  troops  need  to  be  brought  home , that  domestic  policies  need  more  attention  than  the  pursuit  of  permanent  war . The  military//industrial  lobbies  and their  pay rolled  politicians  have  ensured  that  military  budgets  are  untouchable .

In  the  name  of  patriotism ,  the  most  powerful  instruments  of  state  power  and  political  control  are  effectively  removed  from  public  discussion . An  excellent  choice  for  the candidacy  of  the  secretary  of  the  defense  department ,  senator  Hagle  could  be  denied  his  post  because  and  mostly  of  previous  statements  concerning  Israel , and  Israel  nowadays  is  fully  to  the  right  politically  and  a  major  lobbyist  for  the  neocons  philosophies , a major  player  in  our  political  decision- making   and  in a direct  partnership  with  the  military industry .

We  endure  more  state  control  and  lobbying  influence  than  at  any  time  in  U.S.  history , the  manipulation  of  the  citizenry , and  the  fading  of  the  liberal  and  independent  class  is  giving  the  power  elite  a  free  hand  into  some  of  our  most  important  decisions  for  our  future  and  prosperity .

ABSURDISTAN OR BANNISTAN !!!

PAKISTAN -- Last month , it  was  cell  phones . Before  that  it  was  motorcycles , shawls  and  jackets . Earlier  this  past  year , it  was  the  BBC , Twitter  and  YouTube , in  2011 , it  was  porn  web-sights . In  2010  it  was  Face Book . In 1990s  , it  was  Indian  television  and  musicians  with  long  hair  and  short . In  the  1980s , it  was  Salman  Rushdie's  " Satanic  verses " and  some  other  less  famous  writers , back  in  the  1970s , it  was  booze  in  all  it's  forms . All  banned  in  Pakistan  by  Pakistan  , by  more  and  more  Islamic  influenced  governments  and  local  and  national  leaders .

In  the  past  few  decades  Pakistan's  state  and  regional  leaders  have  found  ways  to  restrict , regulate , ban  or  completely  outlaw  technology , information , literature , media , and  even  entire  communities . The  result  !!  The  Islamic  republic  of  Pakistan , or  the  nearly  total  and  systematic  Islamisation  of  different  regions  by  different  degrees .

Once , this  same  country  was  imagined  as  a  secular , democratic  haven  for  India's  minority  Musslem  population , may  well  have  become  the  land  of  "bannistan  or  absurdistan "  or  simply
a  replica   of  the  Taliban  regime  in  Afghanistan  back  in  the  1990s .

In  some  regions  ( north west ) Pakistani  Taliban  militants , would   impose  fines  or  even  bomb  barber-shops  for  shaving  men's  faces , or  fixing  women's  hair .

Regulators  and  governing  authorities  ban  " marriage  ceremonies " as  well  as  " dance  parties "  and  " musical  evenings "  for  citizens  inside  their  own  homes .  However , birthday  parties  and  Qur'an  recitals  and  religious  lectures  are  generally  permitted , but only  according  to the  reigning  sect's  accepted  rituals  and  rites , ( generally  Sunni , and  not  Shiia , nor  Ahmadi .)

We  all  heard  lately  of  the  ban  on  170,000  children  who  were  about  to  get  inoculated  for  polio  this  past  summer , the  Taliban  and  local  Musslem  authorities  banned  the  vaccination  campaign , even  though  Pakistan  remains  one  of  the  three  countries  in  the  world  that  still  carries  the  ugly  virus .

Musslem  militants  continue  to  target  and  kill  anti-polio  campaigners , only  yesterday  7  more  health  workers  were  massacred  , all under  the  headline  that  the  program  is  a  U.S.  cover  for  espionage , and  a  satanic  western  plot  to  sterilize  good  Musslem  men .

IS  this  Pakistani  model  to  be  followed  in  most  of  Arabia  today  ??  Islamic  regimes  and  states are  now  being  established  throughout  the  Arab  world  ,  Egypt , Lybia , Tunis , Morocco , Sudan , Syria , Iraq , and  not  to  forget  the  mother  of  all  in  Musslem  fanaticism  and  the  very  influencing  Saudi  kingdom , and  it's  nouveau- riche  neighbours  around  the  Persian  gulf .
