Lebanese politicians , same as all Middle Eastern oligarchies , have been for decades calling for initiatives to end political impasses in their respective countries , they simply offer a sample of how distant these countries are from resolutions to save their stagnancy , but further more , it shows how disengaged these politicians are from their people and countries .
Lebanese populace had been protesting for years , though without taking to the streets , and starting explosive demonstrations , but such protests are becoming nowadays highly common across the whole country and most echelons of society .
All the usual grievances of all other depressed countries are becoming manifest and clear , taking a firm hold on the Lebanese population , political and economical scenes including to name a few , high unemployment , especially among the youth and newly graduates from the many Lebanese universities , plus a totally stagnating and failing infrastructure . And a sad refusal by all to a true national citizenry , on account of sectarianism , religiosity and ethnic divides .
A struggling and fading middle class , and a clearly out of touch rich elite , and a similarly out of touch group of archaic politicians , all within an increasingly pervasive corruption . All this creates an extremely fertile ground for all types of extremism , Cristian - Musslem eternal divides , Shiia -Sunni religiosity and newly bred hatred , Sunni - Alawite politically motivated fierce loathe and hostility , jihadists against secularism and all minor ethnicities , just to name a few .
Challenges from new extremism like Shiia , Sunni and Alawite organized fighting groups , all very well armed , all with high ambitious agendas , all willing to kill and kill to grab or maintain power . Plus the classic Israeli eternal pressure , and now the influx of a million and a half of Syrian refugees , and the danger that most of them will never return to their home- land .
Lebanese , unlike the people of most of their neighbours , seem to acclimatize themselves to violence , and able to handle the challenges of persistent governments' negligence , only random strikes and occasional civil riots are the breathing cries .
The regional geopolitical struggle will see a continuing struggle for power among the key actors of the region , the independent aspirations of the people and the power politics of the politicians will work mostly in cross-purposes , and will very rarely coincide , this sadly is always best reflected in Lebanon .
Few days before departing this region , and it's eternal problems , a few observations on the ground , my usual many thanks .
