MIHALY'S FLOW ....!!!

Flow  is  an  optimal  state  in  which  one  feels  totally engaged  in  an  activity . Whether  long  distance  cycling  or  blog  writing , sumo  wrestling , reading  or  sex  for  some . In  a  state  of  flow  one  is  neither  bored  nor  anxious , and  one  wouldn't  question  his  own  adequacy , hours  pass  without  your  noticing .

The  psychologist  "Mihaly  Csikszentmihalyi"  coined  the  word  "flow"  for  this  type  of  situations . Flow  often  occurs  , he  writes , in  conditions  in  which  people  become  independent  of  the  social  environment  to  the  degree  that  they  no  longer  respond  exclusively  in  terms  of  its  rewards  and  punishments ,  to  achieve  such  autonomy , a  person  has  to  learn  to  provide  rewards  to  himself .

The  fulfillment  that  comes  from  deep  absorbtion  in  an  activity  outside  oneself ,  activities  that  are  not  about  approach  or  avoidance , gain  or  loss , but  about  something  greatly intense .

Psychological  theories  usually  assume  that  we  are  motivated  either  by  the  need  to  eliminate  an  unpleasant  condition  like  hunger  or  fear , or  by  expectation  of  some  future  reward  such  as  money , status , or  prestige . Csikszentmihalyi  though  argues ,  that  in  flow , a  person  could  work  around  the  clock  for  days  on  end , and  for  no  better  reason  than  to  keep  on  working  fulfilling  his  vigor  and  interest .

So  every  person  should  be  true  to  oneself . If  one  really  desire  something , one  should  go  all  the  way  to  get  it . One  ought  to  stay  true  to  his  own  nature , being  relatively  unmoved  by  rewards  gives  one  a  great  amount  of  power  to  go  his  own  way . It  would  be  up  to  the  individual  to  use  that  independence  to  good  effects .

The  same  could  naturally  be  conveyed  in  other  ways  and  for  other  times , our  actual  times , and  state  of  affairs .  We  do  not  know  what  will  happen  next ; we  must  expect  something  in  the  early  morning  every  morning .

We  should  undertake  what  Seneca  termed  a  praemeditatio , a  meditation  in  advance , on  all  the  sorrows  of  mind  and  bodies , the  sorrows  of  nations , of  peoples , of  wrong  doings  which  the  gods  have  and   may  subsequently  subject  us .

MONTAIGNE'S PHILOSOPHY .....

Montaigne said :  " to  learn  that  we  have  said  or  done  a  stupid  thing  is  nothing , we  must  learn  a  more  ample  and  important  lesson ; that  we  are  at  times  foolish  and  blockheads ."

"And  the  biggest  blockheads  of  all  beings  are  those  who  had  never  suspected  they  might  even  be  such  things ," misplaced  confidence  in  reason  could  be  the  ultimate  idiocy , and  indirectly  also  of  inadequacy ."

We  take  pride  in  our  fair  and  orderly  reasoning  and  our  capacity  to  fairly  judge , and  to  know , and  say  the  truth , but  to  live  with  such  rules , we  have  to  pay  a  price ,  which  is  generally  expensive  and  sometimes  excessive .

It  often  pays  to  be  quiet  and  gracious , to  listen  more  than  talk . And  to  have  an  instinct  for  harmony  rather  than  conflict . With  this  style , one  can  fake  advantages  and  be  more  persuasive  with  certain  positions  without  inflaming  your  counterpart's  ego . We  should  all  realise  that  in  most  conversations  and  arguments , most  people  priorities  are  to  be  liked , rather  than  to  speak  the  truth .

To  attain  wisdom , argues  Montaigne , is  by  learning  not  to  aggravate  the  state  of  affairs  through  our  own  responses , through  spasms  of  rage , self  pity , anxiety , bitterness , and  self-righteousness  and  paranoia . We  must  reconcile  ourselves  to  the  true  dimensions  of  reality  and  so  spare  ourselves  of  harsh  frustrations  and  the  accompanying  destructive  emotions .

That  we  are  ultimately  still  adequate  in  our  own  distinctive  half-wise , half  blockheadish  ways , should  not  keep  us  from  distinguishing  and  accepting  our  frailties , and  prevent  us  from  claiming  a  mastery  we  do  not  have .  That  is  what  Montaigne's  philosophy  teach  us .

IF I WAS A RELIGIOUS BELIEVER ....

ALL  major  religions , and  all  religious  sects  and  denominations  used  and  keep  using  the  tactics  of  group  indoctrination  and  peer  pressure  to  groom  and  influence  adherents  into  conformity  and  keeping  in  line , to  induce , exhort  and  maintain  pressure  on  individual  thinking  and  individuality  in  general . Even  if  it  means  distancing  everyone  from  his  god  to  the  benefit  of  assimilation , conformity  and  submission  within  the  group .  All  fascist  groups  and  small  or  large  militia  organizations  use  and  apply  the  same  techniques  of  coercion , in  present  times  and  in  the  past .

The  traditional  and  new  trends  in  religious  practices  do  not  give  us  the  sense  of  oneness   they  seem  to  believe  in  or  portray  and  enjoy . In  my  opinion , it  should  always  be  a  private  affair , within  private  occasions  that  make  us  feel  connected  to  the  spirituality  of  it  all , and  the  joys  and  sorrows  of  the  world .

There  is  absolutely  nothing  in  today's  rituals  and  practices  of  religious  norms  and  ideas , that  emphasises  the  quiet , the  telepathic , the  contemplative .  Things  that  really  puts  one  on  a  par  with  god , and  where  one  could  and  should  start  questioning  his  or  her  own  experience  of god .

Religions  and  religious  priests , shaikhs  and  religious  gurus  and  leaders  in  general  should  put  more  efforts  and  emphasis  on  listening  instead  of  talking  and  continuously  producing  fatwas  and  judgements  for  our  times  and  the  coming  ones . The  call  for  greater  emphasis  on  religious  practises  of  solitude  and  contemplation  should  be   the  aim .

That  religions  in  all  different  denominations  should  incorporate  more  silence ,  mystery  and contemplation  into  religious  worship  is  evident . They  should  make  more  room  for  believers  and  their  spiritual  guiders  to  demonstrate  a  quieter  and  clearer  path  to  god .
After  all , hasn't  belief  and  prayer  always  been  about  contemplation  as  well  as  community .

Religious  leaders  from  Buddha  to  Moses , Jesus  and  Muhammad , as  well  as  the  lesser-known  saints , monks , shaikhs and imams , shamans  and  prophets , have  always  gone  off  alone  to  experience  the  revelations  they  later  shared  with  the  rest  of  us .

IT  is  high  time  in  the  life  of  humanity  for  people  to  start  forging  their  own  spirituality , their  own  spiritual  connections  to  the  divine  powers , and  not  always   feeling  the  urge  and  being  under  the  obligation  of  displaying  it  publicly  and  pushing  your  own  beliefs on  others .

YES ,  indeed  if  I  was  a  true  believer , I  would  have  tried  to  think  and  behave  along  those  lines  of  worship  and  quiet  contemplation .




In my  opinion , the  way  things  should  be , thanks  for  your  time  and  patience .

ARGUMENTATION , ARGUMENTS AND QUARRELING .....

Arguments  are  a  rational  form  of  conversation . They are not  to  be  confused  with  quarreling .  The  object  of  an  argument  is  to  get  to  the  truth  as  much  as  possible , to  get  to  reasonable  conclusions , accepted  by  both  or  all  parties .

While  on  the  other  hand , the  object  of  quarreling  is  to  get  at  other  people  by  mostly  bullying  and  bossing  the  weaker  part .

What  should  move  us  all  in  a  sound  argument  is  its  sound  intellectual  substance , the  ideas  and  their  interconnections ,  and  not  whatever  emotional  vibes  the  argument  may  carry  with  it.  A  conclusion  should  be  accepted  not  only  because  we  feel  good  about  it ,  but  because  we  see  that  it  is  true  and  convincing ,  therefore  worthy  of  our  acceptance and  understanding .

It  is  sometimes  too  easy  to  be  governed  by  our  emotions  in  our  reasoning , that  arguments  become  primarily  a  means  of  venting  and  releasing  our  anger  and  frustrations ,  or  of  proving  and  defending  ourselves ,  or  of  getting  even ,  and  or , of  simply  scoring  points  for  the  sake  of  our  self  aggrandizement   and  our  psychological  well  being .  Hence  the  truth  is  relegated  to  an  unimportant  and  totally  dispensable  status .

In  the  ideal  argument ,  the  primary  purpose  of  the  debaters  is  not , and  should  not  be  to  triumph  over  each  other , nor  to  continually  strive  to  boss  the  others ,  but  rather  and  by  their  combined  efforts  and  good  will ,  to  reach  out   to  the  truth  as  it  relates  to  the  issues  being  argued .  As  for  winning  at  all  costs ??

There  are  any  number  of  people  who ,  though  happy  to  quarrel  with  you ,  are  either  unwilling  or  simply  unable ,  incapable  of  arguing  with  you .  We  should  not  waste  time  and  energy  trying  to  reason  and  argue  with  people  who  will  not  or  cannot  argue .

THE ARABIC TOMORROW........

AND  we  thought  they  knew  what  was  going  to  happen  tomorrow , but  now  once  more  the  horizon , the  future , opens  out  towards  new  unknown  directions , because  it  is  not  known  who  is  going  to  rule , how  authority  is  going  to  be  organised  over  all  of  the  Arab  world .

Who ,  that  is  to  say , what  people  or  group  of  peoples ; consequently , what  ethnic  or  sectarian  type  ,  what  ideology , what  system  of  preferences , standards , beliefs , could it be a democracy  or a  theocracy , they  know  not  what's  in  for  tomorrow .

Only  the  determination  to  reconstruct  a  viable  nation , by  groups  of  well  and  sound  communicating  people  of  these  troubled  countries ,  and  their  immediate  neighbours , would  give  new  life  and  prospects  to  such  a  project . It's  peoples  would  start  to  believe  in  themselves  again , and  only  then  they  can  start  by  making  demands  from  their  own  citizens , to  discipline  themselves , tolerate  and  govern  themselves .

But  the  situation  is  much  more  difficult  than  is  generally  realised .  The  years  are  passing  and  with  them  the  increase  in  brutality , death  and  destruction , intolerance  and  hate , and  there  is  the  risk  that  people  of  different  walks  of  life  within  these  countries , will  grow  accustomed  to  the  lower  tone  of  existence , to  some form  of  the  present  living .

They  will  get  used  to  neither  rule  themselves  nor  accept  anyone  else  to  rule  them . In  such  a  case , all  their  virtues  and  higher  capacities  would  vanish  into  thin  air  and  past  memories .

If  those  situations  continue  to  prevail in  the  Arab  world  in  general and  in  Syria  as a  good  example , then  ten , fifteen  or  twenty  years  , will be  more  than  sufficient  to  send  this  part  of  the  world ,  back  to  barbarism .  Legislative ,  cultural  and  economical  modes  and  norms  will  disappear , the  whole  of  life  as  we  know  it  in  those  parts  will  be  contracted .

The  actual  abundance  of  possibilities  will  change  into  practical  nullity , a  pitiful  impotence , a  real  decadence . A  tomorrow , and  a  future  which  can  only  predict  a  revival  and  a  return  to  a  form  of  existence  inferior  or  at  best  similar  to  that  of  the  sixth  century  .

MODERN TIMES REVISITED ....

Our  life  as  an  array  of  possibilities  in  our  actual  times , is  magnificent , exuberant , superior  to  all  others  known  to  history  and  humanity .

But  the  fact  that  its  scope  is  greater , it  has  eclipsed  all  the   principles , norms  and  ideals  handed  down  by  tradition  through  the  ages . It  is  more  life  than  all  previous  existence , and  therefore  all  the  more  problematic .  It  can  find  no  clear  directions  from  the  past , it  has  to  discover  its  own  ways  and  destiny .

I'm  not  implying  that  human  life  today  is  necessarily  better  than  other  times , I'm  not  speaking  of  the  quality  of  actual  existence , though  I  believe it  is  better  and  we  are  leading  a  better  existence  in  most  aspects ,  but  I'm  reflecting  on  today's  quantitative  advances , its  increase  of  potency , and  its  effects  on  us  all .

I  believe  I'm   thus  giving  an  exact  description  of  the  conscience  of  today's  man . His  certitude  that  consists  in  his  feeling  himself  possessed  and  capable  of  greater  potentiality  than  ever  before  and  that  all  previous  times  seem  dwarfed  by  contrast .

We  live  in  such  an  accelerated  mode , that  it is  becoming  exceedingly   more  difficult  to  teach  new  generations  our  traditional  culture .  It  is  true  though , that  the  average  youth  of  today's  world  ,  possesses  a  soul , a  humanity  and  feelings  stronger  than  those  of  the  last  centuries  or  the  antiquities , but  much  more  simple , giving  the  impression  at  times  of  a  primitive  man  suddenly  risen  in  the  midst  of  a  very  technical  and  sophisticated  world .

In  our  modern  schools  today , which  were  such  a  source  of  pride  in  previous  times , it  is  becoming  increasingly  impossible  to  do  more  than  instruct  the  masses  in  the  various  techniques  of  modern  life . It  is  becoming   extremely  difficult  to  educate  them . They  are  given  tools  for  an  intenser  form  of  existence , but  no  feeling  for  their  great  historic  duties . They  are  hurriedly  exposed  to  the  pride  and  power  of  modern  tools ,  gadgets  and  instruments    but  not  with  their  spirit .

The  new  generations  are  getting  ready  to  take  command  of  the  world,  with  hardly  or  no  notions  of  history  or  previous  traditional  and  highly  complex  problems  of  our  existence  throughout  past  times  in  the  world .
