ONE CANNOT BUT .....

My  daily  observations  of  the  situation  in  Iraq  and  Syria  , and  the  scary  advances  of   hordes  of   the  Islamic  State  of  Iraq  and  Syria , (ISIS , or  DA'ESH , in Arabic )  to  the  outskirts  of  Baghdad  threatening  the  whole  existence  of  the  poppet   Iraqi  central  Government .

One  honestly  cannot  but  wonder  at  the  Iraqi  army ,  and  it's  whereabouts !!  the  security  forces  and  other  governmental  apparatus ,  how  did  they  evaporate  so  quickly  and  miraculously ??  The  million-strong  Iraqi  army , trained  for  years ,  by  the  U.S.  at  a  cost  exceeding  28 billion $ , evaporated , and  all  equipments  and  arms , given  and  left  behind  vanished .

Didn't  we , American  tax  payers , spend  billions  upon  billions  of  our  Dollars  to  reform and  train  the  Iraqi  army ??  didn't  we  watch  hundreds  of  documentaries ,  films  and  video  clips , showing  and  brainwashing  us  with  the  thousands  of  American  contractors  and  regular  army  personnel   in  military  and  combat  dresses  training  Iraqi  solders , and  didn't  we at the end  leave  billions  upon  billions  worth  of  equipments ,  where  is  it  all  ??

TO  say  it  was  all  a  mirage !!  that's  easy ,  to  claim  that  the  few  thousands  of  ISIS  barbaric  fighters  are  absolutely  invincible !!  or  that  all  of  our  tax  money  are  gone  with  the  desert  winds , or  maybe  only  few  special  interests  and  war  contractors got  to smile !!

WE  still  claim  to   maintain  a  considerable  body  of  military  advisors  and  training  forces ,  maybe  all  or  most  of  it in  the  green  zone , we  keep  paying  for  maintaining  it ,  is it  all  now  in  the  hands  of  few  Iraqi  complicit  conspirators  ?  Iranian  hands  ??  El  Maliki  siblings  deep  pockets ???   or  American  special  war  advisers  and  contractors ??

WE  all  very  well  know  and  understand  that  the  Bush/Sheney  era  adventurism , did  cost  the  American  tax  payer  and  the  American  economy  a  huge  price .  A  price  we're   still  paying  till  today ,  but  honestly  to  look  again  today ,  at  the  results  of  our  spendings  for  the  past  twelve  years  or  so  ,  one  cannot  but  wonder ....

Let  the  coming  days  tell  us  the  naked  truth ,  if  at  all .

THE EVER LASTING SAGA .......

Few  days  ago  ,  a  short  article  appeared  on  NBC  news ,  titled        
   " Israeli  soldiers  finally  break  the  silence ".  A  short  and  good  story  about  a group  of  Israeli  soldiers  who  started  not  long  ago  revealing  and  exhibiting  testimonies , pictures  and  short  video  clips  about  their  missions  in  the  occupied  territories .

In  the  very  quick  to  be  pulled  from  mainstream news , and  now  totally  unobtainable  story , and  through  the  three  video  clips  attached to it ,  few  readers were able  to  read  and  watch  the  way  and  ease  these  young  soldiers  were  sniping  at  young boys , killing  an  11 years  old , while  laughing  loudly , firing  at  whole  villages ,  admitting  to  have  received  orders  to  just  disrupt  and  terrorize  the  local  populace  under  occupation .

Avner  Gvaryahu  , a  29 year  old  soldier  was  quoted  saying "  by  definition ,  our  job  is  to spoil  the  party ,and  destroy  normal   life  in  the  territories ."   Avner  is  part  of  a  group  of  vets , who  have  collected  over  1000  testimonials  from  soldiers  and  vets , plus  many  video  clips  and  pictures .

What  concerns  me  mostly  in  this  NBC  story  is  not  so  much  it's  gruesome  details , nor  the  courageous  admissions  by  these young  soldiers , not  the  almost  instantaneous  pull  out  of  the  story  and  it's  affiliated  video  clips  ,  but  the  final  comments  of  the  prime  minister  of  Israel . Mr. Netanyahu   kept  at  the  time  repeating  in  his  commentaries ;  what  are  these  people  talking  about !!   How  could  they ??   These  self  hating  Jews,  these  undisciplined  soldiers ,  These  Holocaust  deniers !!!!..... etc... etc..

These  Holocaust  Deniers  again  and  again !!! ,  reminds  me  of  a  different  subject, though a  similar  story , where  recently  listening  to  a  GOP ( republican  party )  rising  star , B. Carson , talking  about  slavery  and  how  everything  could  in  a  sense  be  comparable  to  slavery , clearly  insinuating  the  use  and  exploitation  of  this  injustice  for  ever .

 His  and  other  similar  statements ,  made  me  think  again  of  the  supreme  saga  lived  by  us  all ,"The  Holocaust  school  of  management,"  and  how  many  institutions  and  causes  ,  the  African  American  saga being  one  of  them , are  all  ardent  students  and  graduates  of  this  very  influential , successful , and  ever  lasting  school  of  manipulation  and  extortion .  The  Holocaust  academy , I'm  going  to  call  it .

Silence  is  not  an   exclusive  Israeli  decease , Silence  is  a  human  epidemic ,  said  Shaul , one  of  the  Israeli  soldiers  who  decided  to  break  the  silence .


A story  that  enticed  another  story  with  it , all about  not  daring  to  tell  the  truth , or  pinpoint  injustices .  My  usual  thanks  to  all .

 

GRADUATING ET AL .......

Yesterday ,  here  in  Beirut , I  was  a  part   witness  of  the  145th  graduation  commencement  at  the  American  University  of  Beirut .

The  1531  graduates , donned  in  their  black  robes  and  caps , were  all , as  everywhere else  on  any  university  campus , were  looking  to  a  future , an  uncertain  future , some  thought  of  it  positively  as  some  were  barely  looking  above  the  pessimist  marks ,  the  bottom  line  of  it  all,  is  of course  job  opportunity ,  the  same  story  as  in  any  or  all   graduation  ceremonies  across  the  world  nowadays .
 
Our  latest  student  generations , enticed  and  distracted by  near-constant  text  messaging , and  quick  tweeting  and  Face-book  instant  imagine , will  find  it  more  difficult  to  understand that  ideas  worthy  of   the  name , are  to  be  found  in  larger , more  comprehensive  amalgams  like   paragraphs ,  chapters , essays , and  entire  books , even  blogs .

This  is  exactly  why  our  successful  modern  colleges  and  universities  must  absolutely  aim  to  graduate   students  who  can  be  trained  to function  well  doing  nearly  anything  and  everything  in  post  graduate life ,  and  not  students  who  are  mostly  trained  for  only  specific  tasks and  fixed  and  rigid  methodologies  and  patterns  of  thinking .  Many universities and colleges  nowadays believe they are training their students in real problem solving methodologies et al... , but unfortunately , are still very engraved in old teaching and learning  regressive  methodologies . Mostly due to an  incorrigible  older  faculty  classic  mentality .

Receiving  their  diplomas  ,  such  trained   students  will  be  far  more  prepared  and  confident  to  face  a  rapidly  changing  business  establishment ,  and  a  more demanding  and sophisticated  post  graduate  world .


From  La La  lands  some  quick  observations , inspired  by  the  graduation  ceremonies , thank you all  as  usual .   



 

THE NEED FOR BETTER GOVERNING ....

Can  a  bloody  and  heinous  uprising  or  existing  regime  and  their  thoughts  in  the  middle-east , or  in  many  other  parts  of  the  world ,   produce  thoughtful  citizens  who  are  able  to  think  critically  and  differentially  while  being  and  behaving  democratically  all  at  the  same  time ??


Let  us  turn  from  thoughts  to  thinking ,  might  the  members  of  one  society  reason  in  a  fundamentally  different  way  from  members  of  another  society ??   indeed  might  the  members  of  some  societies  simply  fail  to  grasp  the  force  of  certain  ideas  or  modes  of  power  and  governance .


This  is  why  I  believe  it  is  very  significant  in  today's  Middle-East , Arab , and  most  of  the  Musslem  world  ,  to  separate  themselves  from  religion  and  war  driven  ideologies , and  for  their   professional  politicians  belonging  to  either  camps   to  interfere  minimally  ,  and  offer  only  general  ideas  about  the  relationship  between  god  and  man , and  between  man  and  man .


Existing  politicians  or  aspiring  ones  who's  vehicles  are  brutality , lying , pretences , and  deceit  ,  including  self  deceit , are  the  worse  kind , and  most  if  not  all  of  them  in  those  parts  are  of  the  sort ,  because  trustworthy  politicians  could  only  be  convincing  when  the  populace  believe  that  their  performances  are  real .


In  Greek  mythology  the  god  Momus  is  said  to  have  expressed  dissatisfaction  with  man  because  his  state  of  mind  could  not  be  easily  discerned .  The  blur  of  daily  events  in  the  Middle-East  and  the  Arab  world  fogs  the  mind  , it  is  why  we  are  witnessing  this  horrible  void  in  the  area's  recent  political  scene ,  hoping  that  a  more  responsible  generation  of  governors  will  emerge  one  day .




While  preparing  to  revisit  parts  of  the  middle-east , one  cannot  refrain  from  observing  how  sad  the  picture  is , my  usual  thanks  to  all .
     

REORGANIZING AND STRAIGHTENING OUR BELIEF .......

We've  always  assumed  that  the  gods  are  above  all  other  beings , above  all  even  physically , we  always  look  for them up  never  down  or  sideways  do we not ?  living  in  different  spheres , blessed  and  happy . They  themselves  describe it as such .


But  what  sort  of  actions  could  we ,  or  did  we  ,  attribute  or  assign  to  them  ??  Acts  of  justice ?  of  generosity  or  fairness,  impartiality and  equity ?? 


Will  not  the  gods  seem  absurd  if  we  assigned  to  them  the  making  of  contracts   and  covenants  and  return  or  promise  deposits ,  pay  old  debts  for  received  favors , and  so  on  and  so  on ......


We  all  have  to  agree  that  what  could  be  true  or  sound  fair  in  an  old  story  book or  a  play , is  simply  not  viable  as  real  history  or  geography .


We  have  to  make  sure ,   that  we  don't  look  and  treat  our  divine  beings  as  such , and  that  we  are  not  strange  people  living  in  an  indifferent  world  and  in  unconcerned  and  apathetic  times .

CONSPIRACY THEORIES REIGN .....

Nowadays  talking  to  any  Arab  intellectual  all  over  the  world  would  assert  one  fact ;  that  the  condition  of  the  Arab  people  particularly  and  most  of  the   Musslem  world  is  totally  dysfunctional .


Even  back  in  late  19th  century  Jamal Al Afghany , stated   " It is  permissible  to  ask  oneself  why  Arab  civilization , after  having  thrown  such  a  live  light  on  the  world , suddenly  became  extinguished .


Force  is  the  reigning  tool , all  existing  Arab  regimes , or  new  aspiring  forces , whether  Islamic  or  military  oligarchies , only  see  force  as  the  way  necessary  to  effect  their  policies ,  these  pseudo  legalized  authorities  took  to  subdue  their  populations  and  force  them  to  obey  their  will , forgetting  or  overlooking  the  thesis  that  brutality  begot  brutality , darkness  begot  even  more  darkness .


One  other  major  aspect  of  Arab  and  Musslem  dysfunctionality  , is  their  total  " live  by  and  surrender "  to the  discourse  of  conspiracies , in  lieu  of  cause  and  effects  and  reasonable  explanations .  Daily  Arabic  press  and  media  is  full  of  them . I'm  going  to  quote   a  full  paragraph  from  the  brilliant  book  by  R. R. Reilly , "The  closing  of  the  Muslim  mind " .  a  should  read  to  anyone  with  the  slightest  interest  in  Arab  and/or  Musslem  affairs .


He  says  " Conspiracy  theories  are  the  intellectual  currency  of  an  irrational  world  . [ Arabs]  and  Muslims  are  transformed  from  actors  into  victims ~ usually  of  some  Jewish  or  Western  conspiracy . Otherwise , events  are  assigned  directly  to  God  as  their  sole  cause , again  removing  them  from  the  realm  in  which  man's  actions  can  have  any  effect ."


AS  Tunisian  poet  Bassit  bin  Hassan  describes  it  " The  prevailing  discourse  among  us  is  accustomed  to  blaming  the  hegemonic  and  tyrannical  'other ' for  our  misfortunes , for  the  hideousness  that  surrounds  us , for  our  cultural  emptiness , and  for  our  problems . It  acquits  us  of  responsibility  for  our  tragedies  through  the  dualism  of  the  evil  "other"  and  "us"  , the  innocent  victims .


Natural  disasters  are  always , explicable  only  in  terms  of  God's  direct  wrath , will  and  action.  Dr.  Al-Houni  , a  Libyan  reformist , comes  to  the  conclusion ; " Arab  societies  have  only  one  of  two  options : either  to  sever  their  ties  with  Western  civilization  and  it's  cultural  institutions  and  continue  to  do  themselves  harm ....  or  to  irrevocably  sever  their  ties  with  the  religious  legacy  of  the  middle  ages , in  order  for  their  philosophy  to  be  a  philosophy  of  life  and  freedom , and  not  one  of  death  and  hatred ."






Mr.  R. Reilly  and  his  above-mentioned  excellent  book  were  instrumental  for  the  present  blog  about  the  Oummah's  situation , and  I'm  grateful  ,  my  usual  thanks  to  all  my  readers .            

THE WAY WE THINK , AND ........

Here  in  America , and  the  west  in  general ,  we  think  of  the  past  of  our  present , we  consider  the  whys  and  the  whens ,   the  ifs  and  the  whom , always  to insure  knowing  and  understanding  the  before , but  do  we  really  learn ? 

The  fear  continues  ;  the  absolute  enemies  of  everything  we  believe  in  and  represent , turned  with  times  into  Russians , Koreans , Cubans  and  Vietnamese , Nicaraguans , even  aliens .  Afghans , Iraqis , Palestinians  and  Iranians ,  lately Musslems  , whether  we  helped  create  them  or  not .

Let's  recreate  a  different  and  better  after .  WE  Americans  and  our  western  allies  destroyed  any and  every  hope  for  a  real  possible  secular , or  half  secular  opposition  in  Syria ,  by  our  indecisiveness   and  inactivity ,  by  our  unwillingness  to  take  any  meaningful  actions  . 


WE  in  the  west  are  still  walking  the  same  path   whether  in  Syria  , Palestine  and  in  many  other  very  dangerous  spots  of  the  world .


IS  our  humanitarianism , and  of  course  our  interests ,  only  aroused  by  certain  issues , specific  to  certain  areas ,   while  we  totally  dehumanize   with  other  issues , backed  by  different  reasonings  we  create  to  insulate  ourselves  and  wrap  our  minds .


WE  live  forward , a  Danish  philosopher   once  said , but  we  understand  backwards .  The  present  sheds  a  backward  light  on  the  world's  future  becoming  process ,  let's  recreate  a  different   and  better  after  , shouldn't  we  ??
